Putting the “Can” in DominiCAN! – Providence’s First Hispanic Mayor

A long time coming indeed.

As one of the cities known for it’s heavy Dominican population, Providence, Rhode Island is finally able to put a representative face in office.

On Monday, January 3rd, Angel Taveras was sworn in as not only the first Dominican Mayor of Providence, but the first ever Hispanic Mayor in the history of the city.

A Providence native, the Harvard and Georgetown graduate has seen first-hand the highs and lows of the city’s development and has especially set out to focus on it’s financial state and budget obstacles.

Needless to say, this is a big moment. As an honorary Dominican by association with the majority of  my friends being of DR descent, I know very well how proud a people they are and I feel as empowered as anyone to see more Diversity in politics. Shout out to my boy Cesar out there in Providence – this is a good look. One for the minorities!! Let’s hope he does some good work…
