The Very Last “Negroes In The News” Post – Who’s Boning Lauryn? Bow Wow talks life & Death, Consequence Brings his own shovel & Jalen Rose gets 20!!

This is my least favorite section of the blog. Mostly because it usually deals with such negativity. Sometimes Negroes are just Negroes and their outlandish antics have to be discussed. In the short time that this segment has run here, I’ve covered crazy murders and random acts of violence and coonery along with beacons of Hope to balance things out. But Iam not a news blogger. Nor am I a celebrity blogger. So everything you catch in this segment is pretty much something that you’ve already been made aware of or something that can easily be found on the web. And as I get ready to stop blogging altogether, this is the first section to go.

With that said, I’ve decided to go the entertainment route this time around and I hope this last entry entertains you.

NBA analyst and one of my favorite former players, Jalen Rose, just got handed a 20 day jail sentence for drunk driving. The sentencing stems from a march incident in Detroit that ended up in a car crash. His law team seems to be upset at the length of the sentencing, but fails to acknowledge that the actual term was for 92 days. The judge relaxed the other 72 and let Rose live a little. She even gave him a delay to go visit his Grandmother! Whether his reputation and status at ESPN will be affected by this is yet to be seen, but for now the bigger question is, damn – why can’t Black men just stay out of jail??!

Moving on, While Flo-Rida is getting slapped with paternity claims from random chics, Bow Wow made headlines this month for opening up about the birth of his first child and his baby mama drama, as well as his bout with suicidal thoughts. There’s been all kinds of Negro shit surrounding this, from claims that Bow skipped out on the baby shower and birth, to back and forth Twitter shots and coverage that the baby mama in question, ex-video chic, Joie Chavis, left his name off of the birth certificate. Bow made a public statement, written like a true kid, about his role in his daughter’s life and his hopes for her. The suicide talk just seems to be a sympathy play…But the general sentiment towards Bow has always been a scrutinizing one since he’s reached adulthood. Everyone seems to roll their eyes and make some kind of quip about him when he’s mentioned. Even chics that I know were fans of his 7 years ago!! I wonder how much of it is his own doing and how much of it is just people’s natural fickleness after watching dudes grow up after being over-saturated. Now if he had really followed through on those suicidal thoughts, I bet everyone would be claiming how much they’ve always loved him and giving the whole Amy Winehouse treatment. I’m just saying, Bieber be careful!!

Speaking of babies,

really, who the fuck is still knocking Lauryn Hill’s crazy ass up??!  Even Rohan is done. And he made 5 with her!

For some reason (presumably because he got dropped from the label that seems to be killing the game right now), Former G.O.O.D. music artist and Kanye mentor, Consequence has been taking the Beanie Sigel route and taking shots at the dude who’s been keeping him relevant for the last 9 years after his fade to irrelevance almost 9 years before then. A week ago, Cons released a diss track aimed at Pusha T, who’s the newest signee over at G.O.O.D. Consequence’s explanation for the beef sounds really weak and cliche and makes him sound like the bitter left-out member of the winning team. The diss is lackluster for Cons, who can be nice when he wants to be and definitely influenced Kanye’s whole cadence and delivery when he first hit the scene as a rapper. The song ends with a warning that Ye is Cons’ next victim. Now I’m no fan of Pusha T, and I definitely am not a fan of Kanye. I was actually looking forward to something like this because I was expecting Consequence to kill them and say some stuff that needs to be said, but for real, if you keep rapping on this level Cons, Don’t Quit Your Day Job!!

And lastly, Lupe announced that he was quitting Twitter and directed his followers toward the amazing Nikki Jean around the same time as the release of her album, Pennies In A Jar. Now whether or not you believe he’s actually done, you should know that Iam a big fan of Nikki’s ever since the days back at Howard University seeing her do her thing on the piano. You should click on the picture of her album to visit her site and learn more about her!

That’s all. It’s been a fun ride. Negroes will continue to be Negroes. Somehow someway, we know it’ll end up in the news…

Jasmine Sullivan is NOT Lauryn Hill…Or A Robot…

On the flip side of the 7 day Lauryn Hill ego-invasion of NYC and massive alienation of the remaining fans from the generation who actually remember her (ahem), the internets were all abuzz after rising diva, Jasmine Sullivan announced a possible retirement.

Let’s not be dramatic. It was more of her declaring to take a break from the business, as artists do and need to sometimes. She made the announcement via Twitter, posting this;

“I promised myself that when it wasn’t fun anymore i wouldn’t do it. and here i am. i’m not saying i wont ever sing again in my life becuz i dont believe that. but in this moment… rt now… i got some things to figure out,” she went on explaining her retirement decision before thanking fans for their support. “I love you all and appreciate u soooooo much.”

“U have no idea how much u’ve inspired me and fed my ego. but the truth is that i have to believe in me whether you all do or not. and thats what i’m lookin for. that belief in myself. me. I. i love us. thanks for being here for me and riding with me on this journey. let us continue.”

Not unlike Celine Dion, who took a break from music in 1999, Jasmine seemed to be stating that she’s taking a step back. However, what has been causing a stir and much debate is that UNLIKE Celine Dion, Sullivan hasn’t made any major pop chart noise, is not a household name, and has just released her second album. So you could imagine the responses ranging from accusations of the statements being a gimmick to help the sales and draw attention to herself, to criticisms of her being too weak to hack it as a star artist in this dog-eat-dog industry.

I guess it doesn’t help that the following day, she deleted the tweets, adding more fuel to the fire of doubters and those who feel that she has some nerve.

She tweeted afterwards that she’s “Just switching things up a bit till i get it right. now kanye… thats who we should have a prayer circle for. Lolol.”

Truer words have not been spoken. Did I mention how much I Love this chic??!

This is not some Kid Cudi, cocaine-induced sulk-fest where he exclaimed that he was quitting the biz before even dropping his first album. As a songwriter first who has worked with dozens of notable artists, been mentored by Missy Elliot and hand picked by Clive Davis, believe that Jasmine’s seen her share of what the game has to offer. So whatever drove her twitter catharsis, it shouldn’t be taken lightly. And if she does follow thru on her words, it’ll be a landmark move for modern artists in this question-mark musical climate that would make others take a hard look at why we do what we do. Especially considering that her last single had burned up the urban charts all summer and fall (although it is more formulaic than her previous work). So she’s far from a flop or failing artist.

At the time of the buzz over these statements, a song of hers surfaced called “I’m not a robot” which can be gathered to be an insinuation of her feelings towards things right now. You can hear that here

See, there’s a difference between being honest with your fans and being arrogant with them. Lauryn can take a lesson from this young buck who’s still in her 20’s.

*New MALIK-16 mixtape!!* – x 16’s Candles Present – SHIT YOU DIDN’T THINK WAS DOPE TO RAP OVER UNTIL I DID IT!

Just Like I told you,

Today is THEE DAY.

It all started as a dare.

The good folks at and were posting up a song by Eminem and Lil Wayne entitled “No Love” which borrows from the classic 90’s dance hit by Haddaway. They were sharing their views all day on whether or not this sampling of an otherwise infamously corny song actually made their song itself corny by default. They asked their readers for their thoughts, and being that we all follow each other on the great Twitter landscape, this soon turned into a short debate between myself and the 2 editors of each site. The whole thing ended with me declaring to make a really ill track over something randomly cheesy from the 90’s that could rival that of the Haddaway song, and them having to post it on their respective sites if I killed it.  I wound up throwing out the song “She Drives Me Crazy” by The 1-Hit-Wonder group Fine Young Cannibals, and they accepted. I returned 3 weeks later with not only a Punchline riddled verse over a loop of said song, which I called “F.Y.C.” but as an added bonus, I brought in my boy Bobby from our group, The Have-Knotz, to make a hip-hop rendition of Semi-Sonic‘s 1 hit, “Closing Time”. For some reason, DJBooth, which was the most vocal about the challenge, hesitated, and Refinedhype went full speed ahead, even suggesting that we keep it going. I brought up the idea of making it into a whole series and then we decided on turning it into a mixtape at the end of the series. It’s been 8 weeks, delivering different tracks on each week, usually as the songs were just recorded, and that’s brought us here. For all you who haven’t been following, this is catch up time. You get the pleasure of hearing this as a whole project…An homage to the 90’s…The result of a couple mad scientists experimenting and just playing around turned into something blog-worthy. In other words, me and Refinedhype are smarter than the average rapper/hip-hop site team-up. Get familiar!

You should know that the concept for this project was borrowed from the other member of our Have-Knotz group, Komp’L. He and I discussed a mixtape he was planning consisting of nothing but rhymes over 90’s 1-Hit-Wonder songs. When the challenge came up, I thought it’d be the perfect oppurtunity to put that concept to good use. With his permission, I ran with it, but he’s all over the tape, as well as Bobby. So consider this the introduction to us in preparation for our debut project coming this Fall. Don’t say you weren’t told!
